A loose wheel bearing on the way to a remote campsite, a cracked radiator hose on a corrugated station track, or brakes that pull under load can turn a long-planned trip into an expensive recovery. So, what does a pre trip inspection cover? For a 4WD, it is a practical check of the systems most likely to affect safety, reliability and drivability once you leave the bitumen.
It is more than a quick look under the bonnet. A proper inspection considers how your vehicle is set up, where you are heading, how much weight you are carrying and whether it has recently done hard work. A lightly loaded Ranger heading down south has different needs to a LandCruiser towing a camper through the Pilbara.
What Does a Pre Trip Inspection Cover for a 4WD?
A pre trip inspection looks for wear, damage, leaks and setup issues before they become a problem on the road or track. It normally covers the vehicle's mechanical condition, tyres and brakes, suspension and steering, cooling system, electrical equipment, driveline, fluids and touring accessories.
The purpose is preventative maintenance. It gives you a clear picture of what is ready to go, what needs attention before departure and what should be monitored during the trip. It is not automatically the same as a standard service, a roadworthy inspection or a manufacturer log book service, although there can be overlap.
If your service is due, combining it with a pre-journey check often makes sense. If it is not due, the inspection can focus on the systems affected by your planned trip without replacing parts that still have plenty of life left.
Tyres, Wheels and Brakes
Tyres are your only contact with the ground, and they take a hiding on WA roads. The inspection should check tread depth, uneven wear, sidewall cuts, puncture repairs and tyre age. Uneven wear can point to alignment, steering or suspension issues that should be sorted before you load up and head away.
Wheel nuts are checked for correct tightness, while wheels are inspected for damage and signs of leaking around the bead. Your spare deserves the same attention as the four on the ground. It needs usable tread, the right pressure and a way to be lowered or removed when the vehicle is loaded or covered in dust.
Brake pads, discs, hoses and fluid condition are also assessed. A 4WD with a roof rack, drawers, long-range tank, fridge and caravan can be carrying far more weight than it does during the school run. That extra mass puts more demand on the brakes, particularly on long descents, wet roads and loose surfaces. Any vibration, pulling, soft pedal or brake warning light should be investigated rather than saved for later.
Suspension, Steering and Underbody Checks
Suspension is one area where 4WD-specific experience matters. Lifted springs, upgraded shocks and airbags all need to work as a system with the vehicle's normal touring load. A setup that feels fine while empty may sag at the rear, wander on the highway or run out of suspension travel once the family, recovery gear and camper are attached.
A pre trip inspection checks shocks for leaks, bushes for cracking, ball joints, tie-rod ends, control arms, wheel bearings and steering components for play. It also looks for worn or damaged mounts and checks ride height where needed. If an alignment is required, it should be completed after suspension repairs or changes, not before.
Underneath the vehicle, the technician should look for fresh impacts, loose bash plates, damaged crossmembers, oil leaks and components that may have been knocked on recent tracks. This is especially worthwhile after beach driving, rocky trails or a trip through mud and water. Salt, sand and dried mud can hide trouble until it has had time to cause corrosion or wear.
Cooling System, Engine and Fluid Levels
Overheating is one of the quickest ways to end a touring holiday, particularly when temperatures climb and the vehicle is working hard in soft sand or towing. The cooling system check includes coolant level and condition, hoses, clamps, radiator condition, fan operation and evidence of leaks. A pressure test may be recommended if there is any concern about a slow coolant loss.
Engine oil, transmission fluid, transfer case oil, differential oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid and washer fluid may all be checked as part of the inspection. The exact scope depends on the vehicle and service history. Fluids that are low, contaminated or leaking tell a story, and simply topping them up without finding the cause is rarely a good long-term fix.
Belts, filters and battery condition also matter. Dusty touring can clog an air filter faster than expected, while an ageing battery can struggle with repeated fridge use, winching or early-morning starts. If your vehicle has dual batteries, the charging system, isolator or DC-DC charger should be checked as well.
Driveline, 4WD System and Recovery Equipment
A 4WD inspection should not stop at the engine. Universal joints, CV boots, tail shafts, differential seals, transfer case operation and driveline mounts all deserve attention. Clicking CVs, vibration through the floor, clunks when changing direction or oil around a pinion seal are signs worth addressing before a remote run.
The workshop should confirm that high range and low range engage correctly, where practical, and that any lockers, traction-control related concerns or aftermarket accessories are working as expected. It is better to find out that low range will not select in the workshop than halfway up a steep, rutted climb.
Recovery gear is often owner-supplied, but it should still be considered as part of trip readiness. Check that rated recovery points are secure, the winch rope is in good condition, the winch operates properly and the recovery kit is complete. A snatch strap with frayed webbing or a shackle that has lived in the weather for years is not gear to trust when a vehicle is bogged to its chassis.
Lights, Electrical Accessories and Visibility
Long travel days often finish after dark, so all exterior lights should be checked: headlights, indicators, brake lights, reverse lights, number plate lights and trailer plug operation if you are towing. Driving lights and light bars need secure mounts, protected wiring and correct aim. Bright lights that are poorly aimed are no help to you or other road users.
Electrical checks can also include the battery, alternator charging output, fuses, wiring protection and accessory operation. Fridges, compressors, UHF radios, electric brake controllers and solar inputs are common touring additions, and any one of them can create problems if wiring is undersized, loose or poorly protected.
Wipers, washers and demisters are easily overlooked until a storm rolls through or dust coats the windscreen. Cabin air conditioning is worth checking before a summer run north, while the heater and demister matter just as much for winter travel and wet conditions.
Load, Towing and Practical Trip Readiness
A good inspection takes account of how the 4WD will be used, not just its condition on an empty workshop floor. This includes checking that roof racks, rear bars, drawers, jerry can holders and other accessories are secure. Heavy items should be packed low and restrained properly. Roof load limits, axle limits, GVM and towing limits still apply, even when the vehicle has quality upgrades fitted.
If you are towing, the coupling, safety chains, breakaway system, trailer lights, tyres and bearings need their own check. A pre trip inspection of the tow vehicle cannot make up for a neglected camper or trailer.
It also pays to discuss the route. A weekend at Wilbinga, a family trip through the Kimberley and a work run on remote station roads place different demands on the vehicle.
