Patrol Suspension Setup for Long Range Touring

Load a Patrol for a big trip and the weak points show up quickly. The rear sags, the front starts to wander, corrugations heat the shocks, and what felt fine around town suddenly feels busy, harsh or unstable. A proper patrol suspension setup for long range touring is not about chasing lift for the sake of it. It is about keeping the vehicle controlled, comfortable and reliable when it is carrying fuel, water, camping gear, recovery equipment and often a family as well.

That is where plenty of owners get caught out. They buy a spring and shock package based on lift height or brand reputation, then expect it to work for every trip and every load. In reality, the right setup depends on how your Patrol is used, how much weight it carries, where that weight sits, and whether the vehicle needs to be comfortable empty through the week as well.

What a good Patrol suspension setup for long range touring actually does

For touring, suspension has a harder job than most people realise. It is not just there to make the vehicle sit higher. It needs to support constant load without sagging, control body movement on rough roads, keep tyres in contact with the ground, and reduce driver fatigue over long distances.

On a Patrol, especially a GU or a heavily equipped Y62, the balance between load carrying and ride quality matters. Go too light on spring rate and the vehicle wallows, bottoms out and chews through shocks. Go too heavy and the Patrol becomes choppy and unsettled when it is not fully loaded. Neither is ideal when you are trying to cover long distances safely.

A good touring setup should feel predictable. It should hold the vehicle level, stop excessive nose lift under acceleration or dive under braking, and stay composed on corrugations. It should also work with the rest of the vehicle, including tyre choice, bar work, drawers, long-range tanks and towing setup.

Start with weight, not lift

This is the part many people skip. Before choosing springs and shocks, you need an honest picture of the Patrol’s actual weight.

That means permanent accessories first. Bullbar, winch, side rails, rear bar, spare wheel carrier, roof rack, drawers, fridge slide, dual battery setup and long-range tank all affect what spring rate the vehicle needs. Then add trip load. Water, food, tools, spares, recovery gear and passengers can easily push the vehicle well beyond what a generic kit was designed for.

It also matters where that weight sits. A Patrol with a bar and winch up front needs different front spring support to one that is mostly loaded in the rear. A wagon carrying drawers and a full cargo area is different again to a ute-style work setup. If you tow a camper or caravan, the tow ball download becomes part of the rear suspension equation too.

Lift height is still relevant, but it should come after load planning. For long range touring, moderate lift is usually the smarter option. Enough to improve clearance and suspension travel, but not so much that you create driveline angles, steering issues or unnecessary strain on components. More lift does not automatically mean better touring performance.

Springs: carry the load properly

Springs support the vehicle weight. That sounds obvious, but it is why choosing the right rate matters more than chasing a number on the box.

For touring Patrols, constant load springs are often the better choice if the vehicle always carries accessories and gear. They help maintain ride height and prevent the rear from sitting low once the cargo area is packed. If the vehicle spends most of its life empty and only gets loaded for trips, a medium-rate spring can make more sense, but only if the load stays within its comfort zone.

Progressive versus linear spring design can also change how the vehicle feels. A well-matched setup can offer decent comfort at lighter loads and good support when packed for a trip, but there is always a compromise. If your Patrol is set up for serious touring weight, it will not ride exactly like a stock vehicle on an empty run to work.

That trade-off is normal. The key is choosing the compromise that suits your real use, not the use you imagine once a year.

Shocks: where touring comfort is won or lost

If springs hold the weight, shocks control the movement. On long trips, especially across WA corrugations, shock quality becomes critical.

Cheap shocks can feel acceptable at first, then fade once they heat up. That is when the Patrol starts skipping across rough surfaces or feeling vague and unsettled. Better quality dampers manage heat more effectively and keep the vehicle controlled for longer. That matters for comfort, but it matters even more for safety.

Shock valving needs to suit the spring rate and the vehicle load. A heavily sprung Patrol with underdamped shocks can feel bouncy and loose. A lightly loaded vehicle with overly firm damping can feel harsh and busy. There is no one-size-fits-all answer.

For long range touring, reliability is just as important as performance. You want shocks that can cope with sustained rough-road use, added mass and real Australian temperatures. Remote reservoir and premium touring shocks can be worthwhile in the right build, but not every Patrol needs the most expensive option. A well-matched mid to high-quality touring shock often outperforms a flashy setup that does not suit the vehicle.

Steering, geometry and ride height still matter

A suspension upgrade on a Patrol should never be treated as springs and shocks only. Once ride height changes, steering and alignment need attention as well.

Caster correction can be important, particularly on lifted GU Patrols. Without it, steering can feel vague, self-centring can suffer and highway manners can go downhill. For a touring vehicle that spends long hours on sealed roads before it ever hits dirt, that is a problem.

Brake lines, bump stops, sway bar position and panhard rod alignment can also come into play depending on the lift and the intended use. If the rear axle is sitting off-centre or the front end geometry is out, the Patrol will not feel right no matter how good the springs and shocks are.

This is why proper setup matters more than parts alone. A touring vehicle should be sorted as a package, then checked with a wheel alignment and a road test under realistic load.

Don’t ignore the effect of tyres and load placement

Plenty of suspension complaints are not just suspension problems. Tyre pressures, tyre construction and where gear is packed can change how a Patrol behaves.

A heavy-duty all-terrain or mud-terrain tyre with stiff sidewalls will ride differently to a more compliant touring tyre. If pressures are too high for the conditions, even a quality suspension system can feel sharp and unsettled. On the other hand, running pressures too low with a heavily loaded vehicle can create its own handling and heat issues.

Load placement is just as important. Keep heavy gear low and as close to the axle line as possible. Too much weight high up on a roof rack or hanging off the rear can make the vehicle feel top-heavy and increase body roll. Suspension can only work with the weight distribution it is given.

Touring setup is different from weekend flex setup

A Patrol built for long range touring is not the same as a Patrol built mainly for hard tracks and weekend articulation. Touring calls for stability, durability and predictable control over long distances.

That usually means avoiding extreme lift, avoiding suspension choices that compromise loaded handling, and focusing on components that can live with sustained weight. You want a vehicle that can carry a big load to the Kimberley, the Pilbara or down the south coast without punishing the driver or shaking itself to bits.

That does not mean the setup has to be dull. A well-sorted Patrol can still work very well off-road. It just needs to be honest about its job. If the vehicle tows, carries family gear and spends days on corrugations, that should lead the suspension decision.

When it pays to get the setup assessed properly

The best results usually come from measuring the vehicle, checking accessory weight, discussing intended use and selecting components around that. In a specialist 4WD workshop, that process often picks up other issues as well, such as worn bushes, tired steering parts or uneven existing ride height.

That matters because suspension upgrades can expose neglected components. Fit new gear to a Patrol with worn-out radius arm bushes or sloppy steering and the result will always be compromised. A proper inspection before and after the upgrade saves money and frustration in the long run.
