Is Wheel Alignment Needed After Suspension Work?

A new suspension setup can make a 4WD sit taller, carry a touring load better and feel far more controlled on corrugations. But is wheel alignment needed after suspension work? In most cases, yes. If the work has changed ride height, disturbed steering or suspension components, or altered the vehicle's stance, an alignment should be part of the job - not an optional extra after the tyres start wearing badly.

For a 4WD that sees Perth roads during the week and tracks, sand or long touring runs on the weekend, correct alignment is about more than making the steering wheel sit straight. It affects tyre life, braking stability, steering feel and how predictably the vehicle behaves when it is loaded up.

Why wheel alignment is needed after suspension work

Wheel alignment sets the angles at which your wheels meet the road. The main measurements are toe, camber and caster. They all work together, and changing one part of a suspension system can influence the others.

Toe is the direction the tyres point when viewed from above. Even a small toe error can scrub a set of expensive all-terrains surprisingly quickly. Camber is the inward or outward lean of the wheel when viewed from the front. Caster is the steering axis angle that helps the steering self-centre and keeps the vehicle settled in a straight line.

When suspension height changes, the control arms and steering links sit at different angles. That can move the alignment out of specification even though nothing looks obviously wrong from the driver's seat. On independent front suspension 4WDs, this is especially common after a lift. A solid-axle vehicle can also need correction after suspension changes, particularly where caster has been affected.

A proper alignment confirms the vehicle is set up for the way it now sits, rather than the way it left the factory.

Suspension jobs that should be followed by an alignment

A wheel alignment is strongly recommended after fitting raised springs, a complete suspension lift, new control arms, replacement ball joints, tie-rod ends, steering rack components or suspension bushes. It is also sensible after work involving struts, upper control arms, steering knuckles or any component that has been removed to access other repairs.

Replacing shock absorbers alone does not always alter alignment. If the shocks are changed without changing ride height or disturbing adjustment points, the existing settings may remain correct. However, many shock replacements are part of a broader suspension refresh, and worn bushes or sagged springs may have been masking an existing issue. Checking the alignment is cheap insurance against a tyre problem developing later.

The same applies when replacing standard springs with heavier-duty coils for a constant load. A bull bar, winch, dual battery, drawers, fridge, canopy or towing gear all affect how a 4WD sits. If the new springs restore ride height or lift it beyond the old position, alignment should be checked once the vehicle is in its normal working configuration.

Lifted 4WDs need more than a quick toe adjustment

A basic toe adjustment may centre the steering wheel and stop the most obvious tyre scrub, but it is not always enough for a lifted 4WD. The amount of lift, suspension design and available adjustment determine whether the factory alignment range can still achieve suitable settings.

On many IFS vehicles such as Hiluxes, Rangers, FJ Cruisers and late-model Land Cruisers, a lift can reduce available caster. The vehicle may then feel light or wander on the highway, especially with a roof rack, camper trailer or long-range tank adding weight. Adjustable upper control arms or other geometry-correction components may be needed to bring caster back to a practical figure.

With solid-axle vehicles, including many Patrol and Land Cruiser variants, lifting can rotate the front axle and reduce caster. That can lead to vague steering, poor self-centring and a vehicle that needs constant correction on the road. Caster correction bushes, plates or arms may be appropriate, depending on the setup and lift height.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. A mild lift on a lightly used vehicle may align within factory adjustment range. A heavily accessorised tourer on larger tyres may need additional parts to obtain the steering behaviour and tyre wear you expect. The right approach is based on measured alignment readings, not guesswork.

Signs the alignment is out after suspension work

Do not wait until the first service interval if the vehicle feels different immediately after the work. A few warning signs are worth acting on quickly:

  • The steering wheel is off-centre when driving straight.
  • The 4WD pulls or drifts to one side on a level road.
  • Steering feels vague, twitchy or slow to return to centre.
  • You can see feathering, cupping or rapid wear on tyre edges.
  • The vehicle feels unsettled under braking or when towing.
Tyre wear is often the expensive clue. Toe problems commonly create a feathered feel when you run your hand across the tread, while camber issues can wear an inner or outer shoulder. Cupping can also point to worn shocks, balance issues or damaged suspension parts, so it should be inspected rather than blamed on alignment alone.

When should the alignment be done?

The best time is after the suspension work is complete and the vehicle has been settled at its intended ride height. Springs can settle slightly after installation, but that is not a reason to skip the initial alignment. Set it correctly straight away, then arrange a recheck if the ride height changes noticeably after a short bedding-in period.

For touring vehicles, aim to have permanent accessories fitted before the final alignment. Aligning an empty ute and then adding a bar, winch, canopy, drawers and a full touring load can alter ride height and front-end geometry. You do not need to fill every water tank and pack every recovery item for a normal check, but the vehicle should represent its usual day-to-day weight as closely as practical.

After a hard off-road trip, it is also worth checking alignment if you have hit a washout, rock or deep pothole, or if the steering starts behaving differently. Corrugations and rough tracks do not automatically throw alignment out, but impacts can bend components, shift adjustment hardware or expose wear in bushes and ball joints.

Alignment cannot fix worn or bent parts

An alignment machine can show what is wrong, but it cannot compensate for every mechanical fault. Before setting angles, a workshop should inspect steering and suspension joints, wheel bearings, bushes, tyres and ride height. Excessive movement in a tie-rod end, lower control-arm bush or ball joint means the readings may not hold once the vehicle is back on the road.

Bent control arms, damaged steering components and sagged springs are other common causes of readings that sit outside specification. In those cases, forcing the adjustment to a marginal position may hide the real issue and leave you with poor tyre wear or compromised handling. Repair the fault first, then align the vehicle.

It is also worth separating wheel alignment from wheel balancing. Balancing addresses vibration caused by uneven weight distribution in the wheel and tyre assembly. Alignment addresses the tyre angles and steering geometry. A vibration through the steering wheel at a particular speed is more likely a balance or tyre issue, while pulling, wandering and edge wear point more strongly towards alignment or worn suspension components.

Ask for a 4WD-specific setup, not just green numbers

Factory specifications are the starting point, but the best alignment setting can sit within a range. For example, a touring 4WD may benefit from caster settings that favour straight-line stability, provided both sides are balanced and the available adjustment allows it. The aim is a vehicle that tracks confidently on the highway without creating avoidable tyre wear.
