How to Service a Touring 4WD Properly Before a Trip

A touring 4WD can feel fine on the school run and still be one corrugated track away from exposing a weak battery, tired shock absorber or marginal cooling system. That is why knowing how to service a touring 4WD properly is less about ticking off a standard oil-change list and more about checking the systems that keep the vehicle moving when there is no workshop nearby.

For WA touring, the service schedule needs to reflect how the vehicle is actually used. A lightly loaded Prado that sees the coast twice a year has different needs to a loaded Patrol towing a camper through the Pilbara. The kilometres matter, but so do dust, heat, towing weight, water crossings, corrugations and the age of the vehicle.

Start with the vehicle's real touring workload

Before any spanners come out, be honest about what your 4WD carries and where it goes. Accessories and touring gear add up quickly: bull bar, winch, dual batteries, long-range tank, drawers, fridge, roof rack, recovery gear, passengers and a caravan or camper. That extra mass changes braking, tyre wear, suspension behaviour, transmission temperatures and the load on the cooling system.

A proper service should be based on the manufacturer schedule as a minimum, then adjusted for severe use. Dusty tracks, frequent low-range work, deep sand, towing and water crossings all justify shorter inspection and fluid-change intervals. Log book servicing remains important for warranty and resale, but a touring vehicle may need additional preventative work between scheduled services.

Change the essentials, then inspect what the book cannot tell you

Engine oil and the oil filter are the foundation of any service. Use the correct oil specification and change it at an interval suited to the engine and use, not simply the longest interval printed on a bottle. Diesel engines working hard under load can contaminate oil faster, while repeated short runs can create their own issues.

Air filtration deserves equal attention in Australian conditions. A filter that is heavily loaded with fine red dust restricts airflow and can affect economy and performance. Do not knock a paper filter against a tyre or blast it with compressed air until it looks clean. That can damage the media and let dust through. Inspect it carefully and replace it if there is any doubt, especially before a long remote trip. Check the airbox seals, intake joins and snorkel connections too. A new filter is wasted if the system can draw dust in around it.

Fuel filters are another common touring weak point, particularly on diesels. Replace them at the required interval and drain any water trap where fitted. Carrying a spare filter can be sensible in remote areas, but it is only useful if you have the tools, clean fuel-handling habits and confidence to fit it correctly.

Brake fluid, coolant, power steering fluid and clutch fluid also need scheduled attention. Fluids degrade over time as well as kilometres. Brake fluid absorbs moisture, reducing its boiling point. Coolant loses its corrosion protection. Neglecting either one can turn a manageable repair into a damaged engine or a braking problem on a long descent.

Service the driveline for dust, water and load

The engine is only one part of the job. Touring 4WDs work their gearboxes, transfer cases and differentials hard, especially when towing or travelling on sand and corrugations. Check fluid levels and condition, and replace oils at appropriate intervals using the correct grade for the vehicle and any fitted limited-slip differential.

After water crossings, diff and transfer case oils deserve particular attention. If water has entered through a breather or seal, the oil can turn cloudy or milky. Continuing to drive with contaminated oil risks bearing and gear damage. Extended diff breathers help, but they do not eliminate the need for inspection after deep water.

Universal joints, tailshafts and slip joints should be checked for play and greased where the vehicle design allows it. Look for damaged boots, leaking seals and oil around pinion flanges. A small vibration at highway speed, a clunk when taking off, or a shudder under load should not be dismissed before a trip. These are often early warnings from the driveline.

Give suspension, steering and brakes a genuine inspection

A touring suspension is not just about lift height. It needs enough control and capacity for the vehicle's loaded weight, while maintaining safe steering, braking and wheel alignment. Check shocks for leaks, damaged bushes and reduced damping. On corrugations, worn shocks can overheat and lose control, making the vehicle unsettled and increasing stress through mounts and chassis components.

Inspect control-arm bushes, ball joints, tie-rod ends, wheel bearings and sway bar links for movement or damage. On leaf-spring utes, check spring packs, U-bolts and shackles. On coil-sprung wagons, check spring seats, coils and mounting hardware. If suspension has been upgraded, it should be assessed at touring weight, not empty on a workshop floor.

Brakes need more than a quick look through the wheel spokes. Measure pad thickness, inspect disc condition, check calipers for free movement and look over flexible brake hoses. A loaded 4WD towing on steep country roads generates serious heat. If the pedal feels soft, the vehicle pulls to one side or there is vibration under braking, investigate it before departure.

Tyres should be inspected for cuts, sidewall damage, uneven wear and old repairs. Confirm the spare is roadworthy, correctly inflated and accessible with the vehicle fully loaded. Check the jack, wheel brace, lock-nut key and any adaptor required for aftermarket wheels. A wheel alignment is worthwhile if tyres are wearing unevenly, steering is off-centre or suspension components have been replaced.

Test the cooling and electrical systems under pressure

Heat exposes cooling-system weaknesses quickly. Inspect hoses, clamps, radiator condition, belts, coolant level and the area around the water pump for leaks. Confirm the radiator cap is in good condition and that the viscous fan or electric fans operate as they should. A vehicle that runs acceptably around Perth may still struggle in soft sand, towing uphill or travelling through high ambient temperatures.

Battery testing should include both the starter battery and auxiliary system. A battery can show reasonable voltage and still fail under load. Check terminals for corrosion, cable security, battery clamps and charging performance. For dual-battery setups, test the isolator or DC-DC charger and make sure the fridge circuit, Anderson plug and accessory sockets are working as intended.

Also test every light: headlights, indicators, brake lights, reverse lights and trailer connections. If you rely on driving lights, a UHF, compressor, fridge or camp lighting, inspect the wiring for loose connections, poor fusing and chafing. Electrical faults are much easier to find in a workshop than beside a track after dark.

Finish with a pre-journey inspection and sensible preparation

The best way to service a touring 4WD properly is to leave enough time between the service and departure to identify any follow-up work. Do not book a major service the afternoon before heading north. A week or two gives you time to drive the vehicle, check for leaks and address anything found during the inspection.

Before loading up, confirm fluid levels, tyre pressures and torque settings where wheels or suspension components have been disturbed. Pack recovery gear that suits the trip, but do not use gear as a substitute for mechanical condition. A winch will not solve an overheating engine, and a drawer full of spares will not help if the vehicle is overloaded or poorly maintained.
