A trailer that feels settled leaving Perth can become a very different proposition after hours on corrugated roads, in crosswinds or on a long climb with the air-con running. The question of how to prepare 4x4 for towing is not just about fitting a towbar and plugging in the trailer. It is about making sure the vehicle, trailer and load work together within their limits.
Whether you are pulling a camper, caravan, work trailer, boat or loaded box trailer, preparation protects the vehicle and gives you a far better chance of arriving without a roadside repair bill. A capable 4WD is a strong starting point, but towing adds heat, weight, braking demand and leverage to every system.
Start with the numbers, not the accessories
The most common towing problem is not a lack of power. It is an overloaded or poorly balanced combination. Before buying suspension parts, fitting a brake controller or packing the fridge, confirm the ratings that apply to your specific 4x4.
Check the vehicle's maximum braked towing capacity, towball download, gross vehicle mass (GVM), gross combination mass (GCM), front and rear axle limits, and the rating of the towbar, hitch and recovery points where relevant. The legal and mechanical limit is always the lowest-rated component in the combination.
A vehicle may be rated to tow a substantial trailer, but that does not mean it can carry a full load of passengers, canopy gear, drawers, long-range fuel, tools and a heavy ball weight at the same time. Towball weight counts as part of the vehicle payload and usually lands heavily on the rear axle. This is where many touring setups run out of capacity before the trailer reaches its maximum weight.
Do not estimate by appearance. Weigh the 4x4 as loaded for travel, then weigh the trailer and ball weight properly. A weighbridge session can reveal a problem that is impossible to see in the driveway. It also helps you make sensible decisions about where gear belongs. Heavy items placed low and close to the trailer axle generally help stability, while weight stacked at the rear of a trailer can encourage sway.
Prepare your 4x4 for towing with a mechanical inspection
Towing exposes existing wear quickly. A small cooling issue, loose suspension bush or tired battery that goes unnoticed during commuting can become a major problem when the vehicle is hauling several tonnes in summer conditions.
A proper pre-towing inspection should cover the engine, transmission, driveline, brakes, suspension, steering and electrical system. Pay particular attention to fluid condition and leaks. Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid and differential oils all do harder work when the vehicle is under load.
Cooling deserves close attention, particularly for WA touring. Check the radiator, hoses, clamps, fan operation, coolant concentration and signs of blocked radiator fins. Dust, grass seeds and mud trapped between the condenser, intercooler and radiator restrict airflow just when the engine needs it most. If the temperature gauge rises while towing, do not assume it is normal because the vehicle is loaded. Find the cause before a hot day turns into an overheated engine.
Automatic transmissions also need consideration. Some vehicles benefit from an auxiliary transmission cooler, while others need a more frequent fluid service interval when used for heavy towing. The right answer depends on the model, trailer weight, terrain and how regularly it tows. A specialist inspection can identify whether the current setup is suitable rather than fitting parts on guesswork.
Set suspension for the load you actually carry
Standard suspension is designed around a standard vehicle. Add a steel bar, winch, dual batteries, canopy, drawers, passengers and towball weight, and the rear of the 4x4 may sit low while the front becomes light. That affects steering feel, braking, headlight aim and stability.
A suspension upgrade can be worthwhile, but heavier springs are not automatically better. Springs should be selected for the vehicle's constant load and expected towing use. A ute that carries tools every weekday needs a different setup from a LandCruiser used lightly around town and loaded only for school holidays.
Airbags can assist with levelling in some applications, but they do not increase the vehicle's legal GVM, rear axle rating or towing capacity. They are also not a substitute for correct spring selection and sensible loading. When fitted or used incorrectly, they can shift stress to areas not designed to carry it.
After any suspension work, book a wheel alignment. Towing with poor alignment accelerates tyre wear and can make the vehicle wander or feel unsettled. Check that headlights are correctly aimed once the trailer is coupled as well. High beams pointing into other drivers' mirrors are not doing anyone a favour.
Do not overlook tyres, brakes and the hitch
Your tyres are the final connection between all that weight and the road. Inspect them for cuts, cracking, uneven wear and adequate tread, including the spare. Confirm the load rating is appropriate for the axle loads you have measured, not just the tyre size that looks right on the vehicle.
Tyre pressures need to suit the real load, tyre construction and surface. The pressures used for an unloaded daily commute are unlikely to be right for a loaded 4x4 and trailer. Start with the vehicle and tyre manufacturer's guidance, then adjust carefully based on load, handling and temperature. Avoid airing down for rough tracks unless conditions genuinely require it, and reduce speed when you do. A heavily loaded trailer on low pressures can generate damaging heat very quickly.
Brakes need the same practical approach. Inspect pads, discs, drums, hoses and brake fluid condition before departure. If the trailer has electric brakes, make sure the brake controller is correctly installed and adjusted. The trailer should assist the vehicle's braking without grabbing, locking wheels or pushing the 4x4 through intersections.
Couple up on level ground and check the hitch is fully seated, the pin and safety clip are secure, safety chains are correctly attached, the jockey wheel is stowed and the breakaway system operates as required. A worn towball, loose hitch or incorrectly rated shackle is not a minor detail when a loaded trailer starts moving around behind the vehicle.
Test the electrical system before the trip
Trailer lights are often checked five minutes before leaving, which is exactly when a fault is least convenient to find. Test indicators, brake lights, tail lights, reversing lights where fitted, number plate lights and electric brake operation before the trailer is packed.
Check the trailer plug and socket for corrosion, loose terminals and damaged wiring. Rough roads, water crossings and dust can all create intermittent faults. If the trailer runs a fridge, battery charger or other accessories, ensure the charging circuit is correctly fused and the vehicle battery and alternator can support the demand.
For touring, carry a small electrical kit with spare fuses, a test light or multimeter, electrical tape, terminals and cable ties. These are simple items, but they can save a long delay in a remote car park or campsite.
Load for stability and leave room to adjust
A well-prepared combination should sit level or close to level when hitched, with weight distributed sensibly through both vehicle and trailer. Load the trailer first, then reassess what must be carried in the 4x4. It is tempting to fill every available space, especially before a long trip, but extra gear has a cost in payload, axle load, fuel use and stopping distance.
Keep frequently needed items accessible without unloading half the trailer. Secure everything properly, including tools, gas bottles, recovery gear and fridge slides. On corrugations, an item that can move will eventually move.
Before heading out, complete a short test drive with the trailer loaded. Listen for clunks, feel for sway, test the brakes and watch engine and transmission temperatures. If the steering feels vague, the trailer wanders or the rear of the 4x4 is sagging, stop and correct it. Do not assume it will improve once you are on the highway.
Drive the combination, not just the vehicle
Towing changes the way a 4x4 responds. Allow more distance for braking, take corners wider where safe, and avoid abrupt steering inputs. Lower gears on descents reduce brake heat and give better control, particularly with a heavy caravan or work trailer behind you.
If trailer sway starts, ease off the accelerator gradually, keep the steering straight and apply the trailer brakes manually if the controller allows it. Do not stab at the vehicle brakes or try to steer sharply out of the problem. Once stable, pull over and check load distribution, tyre pressures and hitch setup.
