A wheel bearing rarely gives you much warning before it becomes a serious problem. On a 4WD that has hauled loads, crossed water, run corrugations or spent long hours towing, a small rumble or faint movement at the wheel can quickly become excessive heat, damaged hubs and a trip-ending repair. Knowing how to check 4WD wheel bearings is a worthwhile pre-trip habit, particularly before heading beyond mobile reception.
The good news is that a basic inspection can be done in the driveway with a jack, stands and a methodical approach. It will not replace a proper workshop diagnosis, but it can identify the signs that mean your 4WD should be booked in before the next big run.
Why 4WD wheel bearings need more attention
Wheel bearings carry the vehicle’s weight while allowing the wheel and hub to rotate freely. In a 4WD, they also deal with larger tyres, heavier accessories, suspension lift, towing loads and harsh road surfaces. Add bulldust, mud and water crossings, and the seals protecting those bearings are working hard.
Many modern 4WDs use sealed hub assemblies, while others use serviceable tapered roller bearings, particularly in older solid-axle platforms and some front hub designs. The checking process is similar, but the repair is different. A serviceable bearing may be cleaned, inspected, repacked with the correct grease and adjusted. A sealed bearing or hub assembly is generally replaced as a unit.
Do not assume a bearing is fine because there is no obvious noise around town. Corrugations and higher touring speeds can expose a worn bearing very quickly.
Before you jack the vehicle up
Park on level, firm ground. Select Park for an automatic or first gear for a manual, apply the handbrake and chock the wheels that will remain on the ground. Loosen wheel nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle if you intend to remove a wheel, but do not remove them yet.
Use the jacking points specified for your vehicle and support it with correctly rated jack stands. A hydraulic jack is for lifting, not for holding a vehicle while you work around a raised wheel. If you are unsure about the jacking location, stop and check the owner’s manual.
For front-bearing checks, leave the transfer case in 2H where applicable. For rear checks, keep in mind that some driveline movement can be normal, especially on vehicles with a live rear axle. Your aim is to feel movement in the hub itself, not normal backlash elsewhere in the drivetrain.
How to check 4WD wheel bearings for free play
With one wheel clear of the ground, place your hands at the 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock positions on the tyre. Rock the wheel firmly in and out, alternating pressure from top to bottom. There should be little to no noticeable clunk or movement.
A distinct knock, a visible shift at the hub or brake rotor, or movement that can be felt through the tyre needs investigation. Excessive movement can indicate a worn or incorrectly adjusted wheel bearing, but it can also be caused by worn ball joints, swivel-hub components, suspension bushes or steering parts. That is why the next step matters.
Now hold the tyre at the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions and repeat the rocking test. Play in this direction is more often associated with steering or suspension components, such as tie-rod ends or rack ends. If movement is present in both tests, do not guess. Have someone watch the hub, steering linkage and suspension joints while you rock the wheel, or have a specialist inspect it.
On a properly set-up bearing, you may feel the tiniest amount of movement on some serviceable designs. What is not normal is an audible clunk, easily visible movement or a wheel that feels loose.
Spin the wheel and listen closely
Rotate the wheel by hand and listen for a dry scraping, grinding, growling or rough rumble. A healthy bearing should turn smoothly and quietly. You may hear normal brake pad contact with the rotor, particularly on disc brakes, but it should not feel notchy or coarse through your hands.
A damaged bearing does not always make noise when the wheel is unloaded. If the driveway check is quiet but you have heard a droning noise on the road, pay attention to when it changes. Bearing noise commonly becomes louder or quieter as the vehicle is gently loaded from one side to the other through bends. Tyre noise can sound very similar, so rotating tyres or having the vehicle assessed is often the sensible next move.
Check for heat after a drive
Bearing heat is one of the more useful warning signs, especially after highway towing or a loaded run. Once the vehicle is parked safely, carefully hold the back of your hand near each wheel centre. Compare side to side on the same axle.
One hub that is noticeably hotter than the other warrants attention. Do not touch a hub or wheel centre directly after a long drive, as brakes can be hot enough to burn. A dragging brake caliper can also create heat, so a hot wheel is a symptom to diagnose, not proof that the bearing has failed.
If you smell burnt grease, see smoke, or find the wheel centre too hot to approach after ordinary driving, do not continue the trip. Arrange an inspection.
Inspect seals, grease and the hub area
Remove the wheel if practical and inspect around the hub, brake backing plate and inside edge of the rim. Grease thrown around the wheel or suspension is a clear sign that a seal has failed. On vehicles with manual locking hubs, look for grease leaks around the hub body and check that the hub engages and disengages cleanly.
Mud and water are particularly hard on wheel-bearing seals. After a deep water crossing, a bearing may not fail immediately. Water can contaminate the grease, then corrosion starts inside the bearing and the damage develops over time. Milky grease, rusty staining or dirty grease escaping from a seal are all reasons to pull the assembly down and inspect it properly.
Also look for torn CV boots at the front. Grease from a failed CV boot can be mistaken for a wheel-bearing leak, but either issue needs prompt attention before contamination damages other components.
Road symptoms you should not ignore
The driveway check is useful, but the vehicle will often tell you something is wrong first. Book an inspection if you notice a low growl that rises with road speed, vibration through the floor or steering wheel, wandering under load, a change in noise while cornering, or a persistent clunk from one corner.
Uneven tyre wear can also be part of the picture, although alignment, suspension condition and tyre pressures are more common causes. On a heavily accessorised touring wagon or work ute, the front end carries more weight than standard. A bearing that was coping with factory tyres and no bar work may have a much harder life once the vehicle is loaded for the Kimberley or pulling a camper.
When adjustment is possible - and when replacement is smarter
Serviceable tapered roller bearings can sometimes be repacked and adjusted if caught early. The bearings and races must be inspected for pitting, bluing, scoring or heat damage, and the seal should generally be renewed whenever the hub is dismantled. Tightening a worn bearing to remove play is not a repair. Overtightening creates heat, destroys grease and can cause a rapid failure.
For sealed hub units, replacement is usually the right repair when play or roughness is confirmed. It is tempting to choose the cheapest available part, but hubs and bearings are not where a touring 4WD should compromise. Correct fitment, quality components and proper torque settings make a real difference to reliability.
If your vehicle has recently had suspension work, a lift, larger tyres or axle repairs, a bearing check is also sensible. Changes in geometry and load do not automatically cause failures, but they can reveal wear that was already developing.
Make wheel-bearing checks part of trip preparation
Check wheel bearings during routine servicing and before major touring trips, rather than waiting for noise. Give them extra attention after water crossings, a hard off-road weekend, extended corrugations or any impact strong enough to damage a wheel or suspension component.
A quick check at home can save a lot of trouble, but there is no prize for diagnosing a loose hub on the driveway and then driving it anyway.
