For most modern diesels, a service is the regular foundation. A tune up is more targeted work to restore how the engine performs when it is not running as cleanly, smoothly or efficiently as it should. Whether your vehicle needs one, the other, or both depends on its service history, kilometres, warning signs and how hard it works.

What a diesel service is designed to do

A diesel service is scheduled preventative maintenance. It follows the vehicle manufacturer's requirements and is built around replacing consumables, checking wear items and identifying faults before they become expensive repairs. This is particularly important for 4WDs that see towing, corrugations, dust, water crossings, short urban runs and heavy loads.

The exact scope changes between a minor, standard and major service, and it varies by vehicle. At a minimum, it commonly includes fresh engine oil and filter, inspections of brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, driveline components, fluid levels and leaks. Depending on the interval, it may also involve fuel filters, air filters, transmission and differential oils, coolant condition, belts, hoses and a detailed scan for stored fault codes.

A proper service is not just an oil change. Instead, it starts with diagnosis. No software calibration will fix a blocked fuel filter, leaking intercooler hose, failing injector or overheating cooling system.
