A touring vehicle can look the part and still let you down 200 kilometres from the nearest town. The difference is usually not one expensive accessory. It is a sound 4wd touring setup guide applied to the vehicle you own, the load you carry and the country you plan to cover. For WA touring, that means preparing for long corrugations, heat, sand, remote fuel stops and plenty of weight in the back.
The best touring setup starts with reliability, not a shopping list. Before adding lights, drawers or a rooftop tent, make sure the vehicle can stop, steer, cool itself and carry its load safely. Get those foundations right and the rest of the build becomes much easier to plan.
Start with how you actually tour
A weekend camper near Perth needs a different setup to a family heading up the Gibb River Road or across the Canning Stock Route. Be honest about your normal trip, not the most extreme trip you might take once in five years.
Consider passenger numbers, recovery gear, water, fuel, fridge, camping equipment, tools and the towball load if you are pulling a camper or caravan. All of it adds up quickly. A 4WD that feels fine empty can sit low in the rear, wander on the highway and bottom out on rough tracks once fully loaded.
This is also where many owners get suspension wrong. A lift alone is not a touring solution. Spring rates, shock absorber valving, available wheel travel and legal ride height matter far more than chasing a number. The aim is controlled, comfortable travel with enough capacity for your genuine touring weight.
Weigh it before you build it
Get a baseline weight, then weigh the vehicle again in touring trim. Include people, full fuel tanks, water, fridge, drawers, accessories and anything on the roof. Check gross vehicle mass, axle loads, gross combined mass and towball limits against the compliance plate and manufacturer specifications.
Payload is often the limiting factor. Bullbars, winches, dual batteries, drawer systems and roof racks are useful, but each one eats into what you can legally carry. Overloading is hard on tyres, bearings, brakes, suspension and chassis components. It also affects how the vehicle handles in an emergency.
Build your 4WD touring setup from the tyres up
Tyres are one of the most important decisions on a touring vehicle. Choose a light-truck construction tyre with a size, load rating and tread pattern that suits your vehicle and intended terrain. An aggressive mud tyre may look tough, but it can be noisier, less pleasant on bitumen and wear differently during long highway runs. For many touring vehicles, an all-terrain tyre is the sensible compromise.
Do not overlook the spare. A matching, serviceable spare tyre is essential, and remote travellers should consider carrying a second spare or a casing repair kit depending on the trip. Make sure you have a compressor, accurate tyre gauge, plugs, repair tools and the knowledge to use them.
Tyre pressures should change with the conditions. Hard bitumen, gravel, corrugations and soft sand all call for different pressures. Lowering pressure can improve traction and ride, but going too low at speed can damage a tyre or roll it off the rim. Drive to the pressure, load and surface rather than copying someone else's numbers.
Suspension must suit the loaded vehicle
A quality suspension package should be chosen after the vehicle has been weighed and the intended accessories are known. Constant-load rear springs make sense for a vehicle that permanently carries drawers, a fridge and recovery gear. They can be uncomfortably firm in an otherwise empty ute. Conversely, standard springs may sag under a touring load and reduce control.
Good shock absorbers are especially valuable on corrugations. They manage repeated movement and help keep tyres in contact with the road. If shocks overheat or lose control, the vehicle can become unsettled, braking distances can increase and other suspension components take a pounding.
After any suspension work, arrange a proper wheel alignment. It protects tyre life and helps the vehicle track correctly. It is also worth checking alignment after a hard trip if you have hit deep ruts, rocks or washouts.
Protect the mechanicals before adding comfort gear
Long distances expose weak maintenance items. A pre-trip inspection should cover brakes, wheel bearings, steering and suspension bushes, driveline joints, cooling system, battery condition, belts, hoses and fluid levels. Small leaks and minor noises rarely improve once you add heat, dust, load and corrugations.
Cooling deserves special attention in WA. A radiator partly blocked by mud, bugs or internal corrosion may cope around town but struggle on a hot day with a loaded vehicle, air conditioning running and a trailer behind it. Inspect the radiator, hoses, cap, fan operation and coolant condition. If the temperature gauge moves higher than normal, investigate it before the trip rather than hoping it settles down.
Service intervals also need to match the conditions. Dusty roads may require more frequent air-filter inspections, while creek crossings and deep water can contaminate oils in differentials, gearboxes and transfer cases. A workshop that understands 4WD use can set out a sensible maintenance plan for the route ahead.
Electrical systems should be simple and serviceable
A dual-battery system is useful when running a fridge, camp lights and charging devices, but it needs to be designed around actual demand. Battery chemistry, capacity, cable size, charging method and solar input all affect how long the system will run. A large battery does not fix poor wiring or an undersized charging setup.
Keep critical electrical work neat, fused and protected from heat, vibration and water. Poor aftermarket wiring is one of the most common causes of avoidable touring problems. It can leave you with flat batteries, unreliable accessories or, in the worst case, an electrical fire.
Lighting is another area where more is not always better. Good driving lights can make a major difference on regional roads, but they must be aimed correctly and fitted legally. They are no substitute for slowing down where wildlife is common. At night, the stopping distance of a loaded 4WD can be far longer than drivers expect.
Carry recovery gear you can use safely
Recovery equipment should match the vehicle and the terrain. A basic touring kit commonly includes rated recovery points, a recovery hitch for the rear, a properly rated strap or kinetic rope, soft shackles or rated shackles, gloves, a tyre deflator, compressor, shovel and traction boards.
A winch is valuable for some travel, particularly if you regularly drive difficult tracks or travel with a small group. But it adds weight to the front axle and requires proper mounting, wiring and maintenance. If you fit one, learn safe recovery practices. A poorly planned recovery can injure people and damage vehicles very quickly.
For remote touring, communication and navigation need thought as well. mobile coverage disappears fast outside populated areas. Carry appropriate maps, navigation equipment and a communications option suited to your route. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
Pack for access, balance and visibility
Heavy items belong low and as close to the vehicle's centre as practical. Avoid loading the roof unless necessary. Roof racks are handy for light, bulky items, but a high load raises the centre of gravity and can make the vehicle less stable on side slopes, in sand and during sudden steering inputs.
A drawer system can keep gear organised, though it is another permanent weight penalty. For some owners, sturdy storage boxes and a practical cargo barrier offer more flexibility. The right answer depends on whether the vehicle is a dedicated tourer, a work ute during the week or a family car that needs usable boot space.
Make sure the rear view remains clear and that loose items cannot become projectiles. Water containers, recovery gear and toolboxes need to be secured properly. The same goes for awnings, spare wheels and jerry cans mounted externally.
